COMPETITION FOR LEADING JOCKEY DOWN TO THE FINAL NIGHT

OKLAHOMA CITY – The 2011 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season moves into the final night on Saturday with a nine-race program headlined by the $300,000 Springboard Mile, the top race of the meeting for 2-year-olds. That race may also decide who the Pat Steinberg Award winning jockey is for the season as Cliff Berry and Luis Quinonez will carry their season-long battle to the very end.

Both men won two races on Friday night to carry the 2-win margin that separated them at the beginning of the evening to the final Saturday program. Berry has 67 wins to the 65 held by Quinonez.

Berry won with Canigotoo ($9.80 to win) in the seventh race and A La Sahm ($3.80) in the ninth and final race of the night. He had to answer with that pair as earlier in the evening Quinonez won two races to draw even with Berry atop the standings.

Roughout Okie ($7) provided the first win for Quinonez in race two, followed immediately in race three with Elissa Greeley ($4.60). For the next three races the two residents of Jones, Okla. shared the lead in the standings before Berry moved back out to his two-win advantage.

Berry is seeking his 14th Steinberg Award, denoting the leading rider during the Thoroughbred Season while Quinonez is trying to win his second. Both jockeys have been named to ride six times on Saturday night in the nine-race program, including mounts in the Springboard Mile, the last race on the card.

Berry will ride Fire Alarm for trainer Bret Calhoun in the Springboard while Quinonez rides Basalt for trainer Steve Asmussen.

The Steinberg Award is named in honor of the late Pat Steinberg who dominated the Remington Park jockey standings from 1989 until his untimely passing in 1993.

The final night of the 2011 Remington Park Thoroughbred Season is Saturday beginning at 6:30pm (ct).
