The passing of Charles “Charlie” Springer and Gerard “Jerry” McGrath;

Janell Bettis, Owen Rainwater to be remembered at Hawthorne on Dec. 10

 

 

Charles “Charlie” Springer

 

Charles B. Springer was born December 10,1975 in New Orleans, LA to Frank and Gale (nee Sparks) Springer. He died Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

.

Charlie loved training thoroughbred race horses with his father. He loved his family, animals and was loved by all. Charlie is survived by his parents; Cousin, Ben L. Allen; and his dog Jake. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ben and Marilynn Springer and Wally and Joy (Stanislaus) Sparks.

 

Visitation is Monday, December 12, 2011 from 1 PM until the time of the Funeral Service at 4:oo PM at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois 6ooo4. Interment Private.

 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Galloping Out 7301 West 25th Street, Suite  321 Riverside, IL 6o546.

Gerard “Jerry” McGrath

 

Gerard D. McGrath, age 76, of Palatine passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Jerry was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 15, 1935. He was the son of the late James F. and Mary V. (nee Jenkins) McGrath.

Jerry was a former jockey and accomplished horse trainer with a career spanning from 1976-2003. Jerry's career includes 3,971 starts, 488 wins, 493 2nds and 496 3rds with purse winnings above $6.4 million.

Survivors include his children: Heather J. (Francisco) McGrath, Daniel G. McGrath, Margaret Mary (Michael) McGrath. Jerry is also survived by his two granddaughters: Lara Jean and Kathleen Marie, many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as countless good and faithful friends within the horse racing community, especially John Rath, Mary Zimmerman, and Reverend Dave. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Paul and James.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Mass on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 11 am in the Holy Family Catholic Church, 2515 Palatine Road in Inverness.

 

Burial will be private. Jerry's family will be receiving friends at the church from 10 am until the time of the Mass. Please omit flowers, donations to Galloping Out 7301 W. 25th St. Suite 321, North Riverside, IL 60546. The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee is assisting the family with all arrangements.

 

 

Janell Bettis, Owen Rainwater remembered

 

Saturday, December 10 the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and Hawthorne Race Course will be remembering Owner/Trainer Owen Rainwater and Owner/Assistant-Trainer Janell Bettis. Janell will be remembered following the first race on the card with a scheduled post time of 1:40 p.m. The second race will be in honor of Owen with a post time of 2:11 p.m. All friends, family, and associates are invited to participate in remembering Janell and Owen.
