Amazing run from last gets Officer Prado the win in Clever Trevor Stakes

OKLAHOMA CITY – Well over 10 lengths behind with just a quarter-mile left in the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes on Friday night at Remington Park, Officer Prado was last in the field of seven and appeared defeated. However, jockey Lindey Wade had promised himself that he would not give up on Officer Prado, going so far to write the ‘never give up’ caption next to the horse’s name in his racing program. Wade didn’t let himself down, or Officer Prado.

“When I angled him out leaving the turn, he really gave me a burst of speed,” Wade recalled of his winning stretch rally. “I thought ‘Okay, we might get a part of this, maybe third.’ I knew we were way back but we were going to get a piece of it. Then I thought we could get second, and then I thought ‘We’re going to win!’

Win they did. Isn’t He Clever had taken the lead in the stretch but could not hold it as Officer Prado collared him to win by a half-length. Mr Bluegrass Music finished a close third, just another neck behind the runner-up.

Sword Trick set a quick early pace in the seven-furlong Clever Trevor to set up the possibility of a closing move if the front-runners began to falter late. Sword Trick handled the first quarter-mile in :21.56 seconds and the half-mile in :43.45 seconds. Officer Prado hit the finish in 1:23.10 over the fast track.

Away at 8-1 odds, Officer Prado paid $18.40 to win, $8.80 to place and $10 to show. Isn’t He Clever paid $10.60 to place and $10.40 to show. Mr Bluegrass Music returned $17.60 to show.

Sword Trick was the beaten even-money wagering favorite, finishing fifth. Alsvid, trying to add the Clever Trevor Stakes to his win earlier this season in the Kip Deville Stakes, was fourth after battling for the lead in the stretch.

Officer Prado is owned by Kathryn East of Edinburg, Texas and is trained by Steve Asmussen. A colt by Officer from the El Prado (Ire) mare Prado Lady, Officer Prado won for the second time in five attempts and made $60,000 in the process. Bred in Texas by East, Officer Prado has now earned $102,555.

Officer Prado gave Asmussen his third Clever Trevor Stakes. He also scored with King Gulch in 2008 and Grand Slam Andre in 2009. This is the first Clever Trevor victory for East and for Wade. The race is named after the great Oklahoma-bred Clever Trevor who won the inaugural Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in 1989 before going on to become a millionaire while winning many graded events in his career.

Officer Prado, and many from the Clever Trevor Stakes, will now be headed to the top 2-year-old stakes race of the season, the $300,000 Springboard Mile on the final night of the season, December 10.
